Books + Reviews
Here are some books/series that I've really enjoyed lately. Not all of them are well written, but I still liked reading them! I read lots of fiction, preferring sci-fi/fantasy, and I'm a sucker for a good romance. I also like manga and light novels. If you read (or have read) any of these PLEASE TELL ME LET'S YELL ABOUT THEM TOGETHER

The Mirror Visitor Series by Christelle Dabos
- This series is so good. Weeks after I finished it, I'm still thinking about it multiple times a day. I read the first two books in three days; I could not put them down. Kind of a Victorian high fantasy setting? There's a pretty substantial romance subplot but it's not explicit. The writing quality is high, despite it being translated from French. They're possibly the best written books on this list?? There are four books, the first is A Winter's Promise.

The Locked Tomb Series by Tamsyn Muir
- A recommendation from Clonk! I love this series so much, and the fourth and supposedly final book is coming out sometime in 2024. The first book starts with the necromancer hunger games in space, and gets wilder from there. There are some romantic undercurrents, but it's very much not the focus (and not explicit). The books are sometimes gimmicky in a way that won't age well, but it's rare and I still love them to the point that I've reread them. I recommend reading these in print vs as audiobook because there are a ton of things in the text formatting that make plot devices clearer. The first in the series is Gideon the Ninth.

The Sharing Knife Series by Lois McMaster Bujold
- This series is so comfy and good. Bujold is a renowned fantasy writer, winning the Hugo Award for best novel four times (the most of any writer, except for Robert A. Heinlein, who also has won four times). Pretty tame fantasy setting, definitely more prominent romance wise, and it does get a little explicit. Not like, a bodice-ripper/AO3 smut fic but like, it's there. Even if you don't look for romance in your books, though, it's a really good series, and I would suggest it if you enjoy fantasy settings like The Wheel of Time. There are four full novels and one short story in the series, but they were originally all one story that Bujold broke up into four parts (i.e. no time skips). The first part is The Sharing Knife: Beguilement.

Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
- Another Clonk rec! This book fucked me up lmao. It made me so anxious that I read it as quickly as possible to see how it ended. Very crunchy sci-fi. If you've done any advanced physics or engineering courses you might find some of the technical parts more understandable (you can generally just skim through them though, they're not necessarily plot relevant). The basic premise is that the moon explodes and humanity has to survive in space using the ISS, and it's pretty dark. There is little to no romantic anything. Very well written, probably gave me nightmares forever, thanks Clonk.

My Happy Marriage Volumes 1-4 by Akumi Agitogi
- Fun light novels! These recently got an anime adaptation (it's on Netflix lol), and after watching a few episodes I looked up the light novels so I didn't have to wait weekly to see what would happen. They're easy to read and pretty fun. It's a lightly magical setting with an arranged marriage plotline, nothing explicit.
